“Each of you should use whatever gift you have
received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” -1 Peter 4:10
We are Fran and Karen Yorio, a husband/wife couple with a blended family of seven children and four grandchildren. We both were married to other people and went through divorce. We dated for four years (yes, four) before we married each other. That’s a big decision, getting married, when divorce is behind you and blending your families is ahead of you. We used to joke about “perpetually dating” when people asked us if we were going to get married. And no, we didn’t live together during those four years of dating. Really hard, right?
What you’ll learn from us is that it takes awhile to recover from divorce. We know. We have been there, and we aim to show you how to recover. When you do move forward, know that blending families is a big deal and takes time.
We started dating in 2007. We were facilitating a divorce recovery ministry in our church by 2009. We started a small group (Bible study) that same year, made up of divorced men and women. In 2010 we became engaged and in 2011 we tied the knot! During the four-year courtship we spent a tremendous amount of effort getting to know each others children and families. It wasn’t all rainbows and unicorns, but God was sovereign and we leaned wholeheartedly into Him.
MARRIAGE LED TO MORE SURPRISES!
When we married in 2011, we knew God had more plans for us. He led us to a blended family ministry in our church. For the past six years we have done premarital coaching of couples, both first time marrieds and those that have been formerly married. We also coach couples that have blended their families and are going through some pretty serious stuff.
In 2015 we hosted our first-ever blended family conference. We had 30 couples attend and we felt God’s presence every step of the way. We have since had another conference, and we doubled to 60 couples attending. Our couples asked for more, which led us to facilitate a blended family class at our church, an eight-week course which is now on a regular rotation on their events calendar.
SO HERE WE ARE
Nine years of ministering to others through Christ. Nine years of meeting some pretty terrific people. We are honored and humbled that God chose us to further His Kingdom!
So, what’s your story? We’d like to hear it. If you’re reading this right now and your life feels like it is spiraling out of control because of divorce, know there is hope. If you are a married couple and you are dealing with way more than you bargained for, know there is hope.
We reside and work in Huntertown, Indiana. Huntertown is located in the northeast corner of Indiana, adjacent to Fort Wayne, the second largest city in Indiana. With the internet, “here” can be anywhere, as technology can connect us wherever you are! We use Skype for those folks who live in other communities.
